Short Swings!

We tend to give our gear more attention when storing it after the old season than when getting it ready for the new one. Whether or not that describes your approach, it’s important to give skis and boots a careful once-over before getting back on the hill. You may have gained or lost some pounds, or your skill level may[Read More…]

World War II produced many heroes. One of Norway’s best known died earlier this week. Joachim Ronneberg led the ski-assisted raid that destroyed the facility where Nazis were producing “heavy water,” a component they would have used to produce an atomic bomb. He was 23 when, according to his obituary in the The New York Times, he and eight other[Read More…]

The Kircher Studebaker dealership in Detroit in the early 1950s. The car on the left is clearly a ’50 or ’51 bullet nose model, even though only the back of the car shows here. Those are the only years this model was made.

Having A Studebaker In Common With A Legend Prompts A Sherlockian Pursuit. Stein Eriksen bought a new Studebaker in April 1953. That much is certain. I’d like to know which model Stein bought, what happened to it, and if there is a photo of Stein with the car. Why? Because my father-in-law bought a Studebaker that same spring, and my[Read More…]

Two Reasonably Priced Gifts That Solve Getting Ski Boots Off and On

Other than warmth and comfort, the two big boot issues as we age are getting them on in the morning and off at the end of the day. If your home is slopeside, it may not be so much of a problem, but for those of us who boot up or off in lodge or lot, it can be a struggle.[Read More…]

Dog-Sledding Is Another Snow Activity: Don’t Say Mush!

Other Things To Do In Winter For Seniors (Part 2): On You Huskies. Ok, nobody says mush. Nobody, outside of maybe movies, has EVER said mush, though the folks who drive sleds are often called mushers. Mostly, people who run dogsleds just say, “Go!” And the dogs aren’t those black and white Siberian Huskies people expect. Your average sled dog[Read More…]

I rode a chair last season with a couple who got upset when they saw a dead porcupine on the trail below. They “knew” the animal from skiing there for several months. It looked like it had been attacked. I’ve seen a lot of animals while skiing over the years. Nothing larger than the moose who frequented part of The[Read More…]

The Flat Light Polka

The Flat Light Polka

It isn’t just senior skiers who suffer in flat light, but whiteouts may take a greater toll on our sometimes diminished vision and balance. Case in point: the few falls I’ve had in recent ski seasons were all in flat light conditions. One crash last February caused a minor injury and led to the realization that I shoulda known better.[Read More…]

I heard a massive avalanche one time. Chamonix in the late 60s. Several minutes later a fine dust covered everything. When it stopped, it was an inch or two deep. When you ski in the West, you often hear the early morning thuds of dynamite and bombs dislodging unstable slopes. It’s impressive. I like to seek silence, pausing in the[Read More…]

Can You Ski Yourself Into Shape?

There Are Other, Fun Ways To Get Ready Besides Hitting The Gym.
